Gilly Goat in Spring Light
A goat stands in pale spring light, its alert profile and soft surroundings giving the portrait a gentle rural stillness.
An original expressive realism painting — created to move beyond the photo reference and let the living presence come forward. The story behind the painting
Gilly Gilly stands quietly in the field, but there is nothing ordinary about the moment. His head turns toward something just beyond our view, his expression carrying that wonderful mixture of curiosity, confidence, and unmistakable goat personality. He seems completely at home in his surroundings—watchful, independent, and very much his own character. The landscape surrounding him is built from layers of recycled magazine pages, creating a patchwork of color and texture that becomes earth, grasses, trees, and sky. Paint brings Gilly forward from this layered world, softening his coat and giving him presence while allowing pieces of the collage beneath to remain part of the story. The piece is finished with a frame handcrafted from wood approximately 80 years old. Its two-toned patina preserves the character and history of the aged wood, making the frame feel less like an addition and more like another layer of the artwork itself. Gilly is a celebration of individuality, texture, and the quiet personality of an animal simply being himself.
