The story behind the painting

The Story This piece began less as an attempt to faithfully reproduce a stand of birch trees and more as an exploration of what could happen when texture became part of the drawing and color became part of the form. Birch bark was the perfect subject. It is naturally layered, scarred, peeling, irregular, and constantly changing. Torn paper could become bark. A rough edge could become a shadow. Printed fragments could disappear beneath paint and then unexpectedly reappear. Instead of smoothing those imperfections away, I kept pushing them—adding, covering, scraping, and painting until the trunks began to feel dimensional. The background developed in a very different way. Warm blocks of color create an almost abstract landscape behind the trees, suggesting changing light without defining a particular place or moment. That contrast became an important part of the painting: order against irregularity, flat color against heavy texture, abstraction against recognizable form. Up close, the trees break apart into paper, brushstrokes, words, edges, and color. From a distance, those individual pieces come together and simply become a grove of birches. That transformation—from fragments into form—is really what this piece is about.
