The Weight of Honey There is a weight to honey that has nothing to do with how much it weighs in our hands. A single bee spends her life working—leaving the hive again and again, traveling from flower to flower, gathering tiny amounts of nectar and pollen before carrying them home. What seems so abundant to us is created through countless small journeys and the collective work of thousands. That is what I wanted to capture in The Weight of Honey. The bee is deliberately shown covered in pollen, almost burdened by it. There is beauty in that golden dust, but there is also effort. Behind her, the honeycomb is rich, warm and overflowing—the result of work that no single bee could accomplish alone. And that is where the title has two distinct meanings. For the bee, honey carries the weight of labor. It represents distance traveled, flowers visited, wings beaten, pollen carried and the extraordinary cooperation of the colony. Each bee contributes something small, yet together they create something remarkable. For us, honey carries the weight of responsibility. We often see the finished product without considering what it took to create it. A jar of honey can seem ordinary because it is readily available to us. But when we understand the immense amount of work behind it—and the importance of bees to the ecosystems we depend upon—it becomes something very different. This painting is not simply about honey. It is about work, community, sacrifice and appreciation. It is about what can be accomplished when many small efforts become one collective purpose. Perhaps most of all, The Weight of Honey is a reminder to look more closely at the things we take for granted. Because something can be small and still carry enormous weight. — Barbara J. Demers
